Campaigners are calling on Bath and North East Somerset Council to take action after a serious car accident last week. Karen Walker and her husband David were driving through the country lanes between Peasedown St John and Writhlington, locally known as ‘Writhlington Pit’, only to be met by a speeding vehicle which left their car with thousands of pounds worth of damage.
Gail Coleshill (left) and Karen Walker (right) visit the location where the accident happened.
Thankfully neither of them were injured but Mrs Walker has been left shaken by the event. She said: “There has always been a serious problem with speeding vehicles through these lanes. Many drivers use Writhlington Pit as a rat run! I know of lots of people who have been involved in car accidents down there. Unless the Council takes action to restrict drivers’ speeds someone could soon be killed.” Mrs Walker, who lives in Peasedown St John, contacted Prospective Lib Dem MP Gail Coleshill asking her to press B&NES Council look into the matter. Gail said: “I was horrified to hear of Mrs Walker’s accident when she got in contact with me. She told me that the shock left her feeling physically sick. Unfortunately speeding through these lanes is nothing new, and I have asked the Council to put up signs and paint rumble strips to warn drivers of the dangers of speeding here. Let’s hope that urgent safety measures are put in place soon to prevent any more accidents.” Gail has asked a local Councillor to contact the Traffic and Safety team on B&NES Council asking them to address the issue and report back on what measures can be put in place.
