Tories cannot buy the voters of North East Somerset - 3rd March '10 E-mail

Commenting on the news that Lord Ashcroft has at last admitted he does not pay tax on his world wide holdings senior Liberal Democrat Gail Coleshill said:

“The Conservatives think they can throw money from Belize at North East Somerset and buy the seat. They clearly under-estimate the people who know the Tories are trying to airbrush their record of pandering to the super-rich and ignoring everyone else.

Give people power to sack MP - 28th Feb '10 E-mail

As MP’s all over the country are being forced to pay back some of the money they’ve claimed in expenses, local Parliamentary Spokesperson Gail Coleshill is backing plans that would give residents the chance to sack their MP.

Senior Lib Dem Gail Coleshill believes that many people have become disillusioned since the expenses scandal last year, and is encouraging them to back proposals that would put people back at the centre of our democratic system.

The people have taken democracy into their own hands - 1st March '10 E-mail

An open letter

For almost a year now I have been continuously inspired by the hard work of campaigners in Midsomer Norton to create their own Town Council. For years, there has been a growing dislike for Norton Radstock Town Council – an organisation that is increasingly out of touch with residents and has no public mandate to serve the community.

Last Spring, over 900 people in Midsomer Norton demonstrated their growing anger towards the current Town Council by returning a petition card calling for a Local Governance Review to take place. Later in the year, a further 700 people in Westfield signed a petition calling for the same for their area. That’s more than many B&NES Councillors get in their own elections!

New curry club in Peasedown St John - 23rd Feb '10 E-mail
Nearly 20 people from Peasedown and surrounding areas enjoyed a spicy new start to the year at a local Indian restaurant club in Peasedown St John.

The set menu went down a treat, and local councillor Sarah Bevan, who started the club, was delighted at the high turnout.

She said:

'Saj and Raj Ahmed were extremely welcoming when I first talked the idea through with them - we had a lovely evening, and I chose a quiet night for the restaurant to help boost this valuable local business. The club will continue to meet here on the first Monday of every month. Everyone is welcome to come along and talk about anything that is exercising their brain on the night!'

The threefold aims of the club are to support a local business, to meet Prospective MP Gail Coleshill, and to create new friendships and contacts for local residents.

Cllr Bevan added:

'It's a very convenient way to meet new and old friends, so I hope we'll see lots of new members in the coming months'.
