The B&NES Council Cabinet will be forced to meet and reconsider its decision to start the process of closing Culverhay school after a crucial vote on a formal challenge last night.
The B&NES children and young people overview and scrutiny panel agreed by seven votes in favour to none against that the Cabinet should look again at the Bath secondary schools review. Panel members questioned the Cabinet member for Children's services as well as Councillors and public speakers for over three hours to determine whether the Cabinet took all the right factors into account when making their decision.

Somerset MP and government minister backs Simon Allen |
Radstock received a VIP guest on Friday, when Somerset MP and government minister David Heath visited the town to back Lib Dem Simon Allen for next week's local by election.
David Heath, who is the MP for Somerton and Frome and the Deputy Leader of the House of Commons, believes Simon will make an excellent councillor.
He said: "Radstock is in need of a fresh start. The infighting amongst the Labour Party over the years has caused disillusionment with local democracy.
Trust in politicians here is quite low, which is why the town needs a councillor to lead from the front, build community spirit and restore civic pride. Simon Allen is a local man with the needs of local people close to his heart."

The decision to go ahead with the closure was taken last week following a consultation process on reorganising secondary school provision in the city. The challenge is through a formal 'call in' of the Cabinet decision, which has been signed by 27 Councillors and must now be heard at an Overview and Scrutiny panel meeting within 14 working days. Councillor Paul Crossley is the leader of the Liberal Democrat opposition Group on B&NES Council and will be the 'lead member' of the call in.
