Youth democracy under threat - 22nd Oct '09 |

A Liberal Democrat Councillor has attacked a decision by Conservative-run B&NES Council to cancel the forthcoming UK Youth Parliament Elections, which are due to take place in the authority in January.
Cllr Nathan Hartley (Peasedown St John) was contacted by frustrated members of the young people’s campaign group DAFBY (Democratic Action for B&NES Youth) last week with the sad news that the Council has decided to cancel the annual elections – which are now approaching their tenth year.

Lib Dems lead the way on Climate Change...again - 22nd Oct '09 |
|
In Parliament yesterday Simon Hughes MP led the debate to force the Government to agree to reduce carbon emissions by 10% next year. Thousands of people from the 10:10 campaign contacted their MPs to ask them to vote in favour of the motion and 226 of them did.
The Government including local MP Dan Norris defeated the motion by a vote of 297.

Dear Editor,
Selling off Government assets is a poor way to regenerate the economy. I heard at least one economist say that selling off these assets is not a sensible way to raise money at this time. Borrowing at the rates the Government can get would be much more sensible. Then Government investment in real projects, which give a return and help to resolve other issues, would be possible.
